As a PhD student fighting gender stereotypes through educational robotics, I’m always looking for how they show up in the world. So, tell me:
Do you see a subtle stereotype in the choice of cover colors for the “World Robotics” reports?
The cover for Industrial Robots? Light blue.
The cover for Service Robots? Pink.
This choice, whether conscious or not, reinforces an old bias: blue for industry (traditionally male), and pink for service (traditionally female). It’s a great example of how these stereotypes are embedded everywhere, from the toys we give kids to the visual branding of global reports.
This is exactly why my work is so important. We need to actively challenge these hidden cues to build a more inclusive future in technology for everyone.
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you!
