Gender differences in mathematics: what does the research say, and what can teachers do?
A landmark study published in Nature by Martinot et al. on the gender gap in mathematics was the starting point for a deeper reflection — one that I developed into an article for MaddMaths!, the mathematics outreach magazine of SIMAI (Italian Society of Applied and Industrial Mathematics).
In the article I explore three interconnected layers: the subtle ways gender stereotypes operate, often below the threshold of awareness; the responsibility of teachers in shaping new possibilities; and some concrete strategies to support change — with a particular focus on educational robotics as a transformative tool for inclusion.
The evidence is clear: the problem is not girls’ abilities. It is the invisible barriers built around them, day after day, through language, expectations, and the choices we make in the classroom.
